Experience the plight of astronomers at the 14000-foot summit of Mauna Kea! Veteran observers John A., Juan D., Kelly F., Ted K., and Tim Livengood took the HIPWAC spectrometer to the IRTF observatory on the Big Island of Hawaii and were inspired to write the lyrics to “Hotel Mauna Kea”. Here, Juan, Kelly and Ted perform the song and all co-investigators star in this above-the-clouds music video. “Hotel Mauna Kea” is a parody of The Eagles’ “Hotel California” by Felder, Henley, and Frey….

It looks like you folk on the professional side of the aisle (Isle?) are a fun bunch.

A combination of being unaware of the problem while on the dirt road, and then convincing ourselves while on the pavement that the tires sounded in need of balancing and rotation! We will try to catch it sooner next time :)

Thank you so much, but although I am the singer, I am just the co-lyricist. All co-Investigators had a hand in the lyrics during an amazing moment of inspiration while on a break from observing. We are so pleased that others enjoy the lyrics as well!

AWESOME, BABY!!! You know, Kelly, your talent to take composed songs and create your own lyrics and see if it suits the rhythm is quite amazingly wonderful like sunbeams and rainbows!

We have checked with folks here at Mauna Kea. The most correct naming is “Mauna a Wakea”, pronounced MOW-nuh (rhymes with now-nuh) ah vah-kay-uh, which means “mountain of Wakea, the sky-father.” The casual usage is the modern Mauna Kea, pronounced “MOW-nah Kay-ah.” We have our pronunciation advice from the visitor center, from rangers, and on best authority from Kimo from the ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center.

I’ve already told you I like the video, but I haven’t posted any comments.
We all miss you now that you’re back in Hawaii!

ScienceTim again. We had a second comment from Paahau, who apparently did not take kindly to the intended joking in my response to antman252. We’re trying to avoid obscenities here, which is why I am not approving Paahau’s comment to be posted. Say it clean, even if non-complimenatry, and it will stay.
I will ask my Hawaiian cultural contacts the correct pronunciation when I am there in a week. Will we accept that it’s an authoritative pronunciation if it’s from native Hawaiians?
